come to executive meetings

The Executive meets once a month, usually in the early evening, at the WEL office.  Apart from deciding current business, members can volunteer to take on responsibility for various activities.  WEL receives invitations to many important events and these are shared among the Executive and members.  The office volunteer maintains an excellent system of keeping the executive up to date with all correspondence by regularly emailing members and Executive.  Administrative decisions are often settled by email/phone between meetings.

WEL relies totally on the work of volunteer members

Now, more than ever, WEL needs your active participation.  Whether it be as a member of the Executive or providing computer expertise, website development, assisting in the office, managing fund-raising activities, assisting the newsletter editor, representing WEL at meetings or functions, undertaking projects, providing expert advice to the Executive, writing submissions or being a member of a campaign team (WEL intervened in the recent Work and Family test case and has active teams in Industrial Relations, reproductive rights and membership action)

With the NSW State elections being held in March 2007, and the Federal elections also sometime in 2007, it is going to be a busy year for WEL to ensure that women's issues are on the agenda.

Get active with WEL and make a difference!

We need to make the next generations know we value the activists, the committed and the persistent, who, by putting feminism into practice and policy, create a fairer world for all by creating a more civil society.

WEL was formed in 1972 to ensure that women's rights became an issue in the Federal election campaign of that year. It achieved great success and has been active at every election since, maintaining the pressure on political parties between elections. Lobbying occurs at national, state and local government levels. WEL aims to improve women's access to decision-making bodies in order to give women input into those things that affect their lives.

WEL lobbies on and monitors issues such as the following:

  • anti-discrimination legislation
  • women's education, training and employment
  • abortion, reproductive rights and women's right to choose
  • health
  • family law
  • media treatment of women
  • child care
  • industrial relations
  • violence against women
  • women on Boards

"The Many Faces of WEL"

The Women's Electoral Lobby (WEL) is currently searching for a number of women to volunteer their faces to use in its new promotional material. Could you be one of the faces of WEL? Or do you know somebody else who could be?

Please don't be shy - WEL really needs your help in making this happen. This is NOT a beauty contest. We are looking for faces to represent women from all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. If you or somebody you know is interested in volunteering for this exciting opportunity to become one of the faces of WEL please contact the WEL Office on 9212 4374 or welnsw@comcen.con.au.

All volunteers will receive a year's subscription to WEL and a $30 gift voucher from the Feminist Bookshop in Rozelle. Time and location of photoshoot to be advised.
