Spontaneous
hepatocellular carcinoma in a Syrian hamster, Online
J Vet Res, 12 (1):
1-6, 2008. A
5-month-old female Syrian hamster was presented with a history of
anorexia, weight loss, and progressive abdominal enlargement. Lateral
view of
the abdominal radiograph showed substantial loss of
intra-abdominal contrast. Further investigation and diagnostic
procedures was rejected by the owner. However, a necropsy was performed
and the
gross pathological findings included ascites,
hepatomegaly and small hepatic cysts. The
tumor was histopathologically diagnosed as
hepatocellular
carcinoma (HCC). To the best of the authors` knowledge, regarding the
low
incidence rate of spontaneous neoplasia in
hamsters,
this is first report of natural development of hepatocellular
carcinoma in a Syrian hamster.
