Subacute effects of lindane on Clarias gariepinus

The toxic effect of subacute lindane exposure to Claris gariepinus was investigated on 12 fish. While the control fish remained healthy and gained weight during 14 days of treatment, exposed fish exhibited toxic responses ranging from anorexia, depleted PCV (anemia), weakness, to leucopenia. Tissue histopathology revealed marked inflammatory cell infiltration. Plasma biochemical studies revealed a high alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphates and aspartate aminotransferase. The study showed that lindane in low doses may cause pathology in Clarias gariepeinus and its presence in water resources may pose a threat to Clarias gariepinus, a major fresh water fish.
