Pathogenesis of anemia in Cocker Spaniels with chronic renal failure

The pathogenesis of anemia in cocker spaniel dogs with chronic renal failure (CRF) was evaluated in 15 dogs with CRF and 15 controls without CRF. Erythrograms, serum erythropoietin (EPO)  erythrocyte-bound immunoglobulin or complement using Coombs test were evaluated in both groups. No difference in EPO serum concentration was observed between the groups with CRF, or between sex and age. A positive Coombs test was found in 1 CRF dog. Positive correlation were found between serum concentrations of creatinine and phosphorus (P<0.001) and negative correlations between packed cell volume and serum creatinine (P<0.0001), and packed cell volume with serum phosphorus (P<0.0001). The development of anemia correlated with increased serum concentration of creatinine and phosphorus. Immunomediated haemolysis, may also contribute to causing anemia. The presence of non-regenerative anemia could indicate a relative deficit of EPO in dogs with CRF, although absolute values were close to the concentrations observed in the healthy dogs.
