J Vet Res, 11 (3) : 24-31, 2007. The pathogenesis of anemia in cocker spaniel dogs with
chronic renal
failure (CRF) was evaluated in 15 dogs with CRF and 15 controls without
CRF. Erythrograms,
serum erythropoietin (EPO)
erythrocyte-bound immunoglobulin or complement using Coombs test
were
evaluated in both groups. No difference in EPO serum concentration was
observed
between the groups with CRF, or between sex and age. A positive Coombs
test was
found in 1 CRF dog. Positive correlation were found between serum
concentrations of creatinine and phosphorus (P<0.001) and negative
correlations between packed cell volume and serum creatinine
(P<0.0001), and
packed cell volume with serum phosphorus (P<0.0001). The development
of anemia
correlated with increased serum concentration of creatinine and
phosphorus. Immunomediated
haemolysis, may also contribute to causing anemia. The presence of
non-regenerative anemia could indicate a relative deficit of EPO in
dogs with
CRF, although absolute values were close to the concentrations observed
in the
healthy dogs.
