ABSTRACT

This study was conducted on 300 clinically healthy Holstein cattle aged 1-12 months, 12-36 months and >36 months. The cattle were auscultated on both sides of the cardiac area of the chest and on mitral, aortic, pulmonary and tricuspid valve areas by two clinicians with a Littman type stethoscope and sensor stethoscope (meditron). The prevalence of heart murmurs was 47.7%; diastolic murmurs 11.2% and systolic murmurs 88.8%. The timing of 94.4% of murmurs was in early to early to mid and the intensity of 93% was grade 1/5 to grade 3/5. The PMI of 52.4%, 8.4%, 17.5% and 21.7% was heard over the pulmonic, aortic, mitral and tricuspid valves, respectively. This study showed that cardiac murmurs in clinically healthy dairy cattle are common and the majority are functional.
